Kitty Kilburn is Paraplanner with One Wealth. She has been working at One Solution since 2011.
I graduated with a first class honours degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics from Strathclyde University but after working as an Orthotist for a number of months I realised that this was not to be the vocation I had anticipated. I decided therefore to take some advice from a careers adviser and it was then that I decided I wanted a career in financial planning as I felt this would offer me an ongoing opportunity to learn and would play to my technical abilities.
I was right! The role of a Paraplanner is highly technical. The learning curve is a continuous one and that really motivates me. For example, a budget announcement may impact our advice process and almost overnight I will need to fully understand the implications of any changes. I also have to be up to speed on new products coming onto the market and have an awareness of regulatory changes. It is a varied role that requires me to stay on top of my technical expertise.
In April 2012 I took my AF3 exam. One Academy paid for all of my study materials and for the exam itself. I was also allowed study leave before the exam and, of course, time off for the exam. The Academy was really supportive throughout the process and helped me to improve my knowledge and, ultimately, pass my exam.
My plan from here is to remain a Paraplanner and continue to develop my expertise. In October 2012 I am taking my AF1 exam again with support from One Academy.
