One 4 Kids 2016 Charity Art Auction

One 4 Kids are delighted to be hosting our third Contemporary Art Auction, in association with RUDA UK, on Friday 3rd of June 2016.

The evening will start at 18:00 pm with a Drinks and Canapés Reception in the Grand Hall of 200 St Vincent Street in Glasgow.  The Auction will then commence at 19:00 pm in the adjoining Glasgow Suite.  We have secured the excellent Ali Logan as our Auctioneer again.

Louise Johnstone of RUDA UK, and an artist in her own right, has been busy gathering works, kindly donated by her many connections in the art world.  We will have in the region of 100 works to auction on the night.  The pieces will predominantly be paintings with some sculptures, pottery, photographs and jewellery too.  One of the paintings to be auctioned is a self-portrait by Scottish artist Jack Vettriano.

Our last auction, held in October 2011, was a tremendous success, raising in the region of £27,000 for the Ntimbanjayo Memorial School of Excellence in Songea, Tanzania.  This allowed huge progress to be made at the school which now has over 180 pupils.  This project is extremely close to the Group’s heart with a team of volunteers planning to visit the school for a third time in September.  Funds raised at our event in June will go towards constructing a much needed dormitory block at the school with laundry facilities.

As with every one of our fundraisers, the cost of the auction will be picked up entirely by the Group.  This allows every penny raised at the auction to go directly to the school.

2015 Tanzania Volunteer Programme

Not many get to go on a ‘once-in-a-life-time’ experience twice, but on the 2nd July 2015, team leader Gillian travelled with Mike, Jim, Chris and Grace to our sponsored school in the village of Songea, Tanzania.

The aim for this year was to focus on giving the school the foundations for self-sufficiency, and develop their ability to support themselves using the land they have. However, the ground in Tanzania is particularly dry, lacking water and vegetation. So, it was decided between One4Kids and our fellow charitable companions RUDA to build portable chicken coops. The aim was to kill two birds with one stone – not literally! We would use the chickens to fertilise the land as well as provide another source of food and vitamins for the children through the eggs.

The build was a great success, and the 20 new chickens (including a cockerel to rule the roost) were welcomed by the children into their new home.

Once again, Jim and Mike worked as a fantastic team. With the help of men from the local area, they built two perfectly crafted coops from scratch.

Gillian, Chris and Grace incorporated this into their week’s teaching and created fun activities for the children to help them understand the biology behind the chickens.

Chris also brought the sound of music to the teaching week, and mesmerised the children with his voice and guitar skills in music lessons.

Each child was given the opportunity to have a one-on-one reading session as well. This not only helped their reading abilities, but also gave them the chance to have someone’s full, undivided attention.

Another focus of the week was to build benches and chairs for the children. The school had previously only had tables and chairs in some of the classrooms so meals were predominantly eaten on the ground. Within a minute of completion, the children were making themselves at home in their new seating area.

Like last year, the week ended on an absolute high with our sports day and we were all over enjoyed to see our first egg from the hens.

The children have made amazing progression over the past year. Not only have their English language skills improved, but their education, health and happiness is going from strength to strength.

One4Kids’ relationship with The Ntimbanjayo Memorial School of Excellence has been cemented, and they will continue to work together with RUDA to ensure every child leaves the school with the best education possible.
